If you have access to an Indian store, you can buy loose black tea leaves (Lipton Red Label only, Tata Tea, Taj Mahal, Brooke Bond...) and pre made chai masala powder (spices) which is pretty good. The black tea is either Assam or Darjeeling. I think you can also purchase Lipton Masala teabags (but I heard they were pretty strong) so people add 1 masala teabag & 1 regular tea bag to balance it out. Indian chai (or Afghani tea) is very different from the "chai" here in the US. Or you can make the fresh chai masala (tea spice mixture). The Indian word for tea is CHAI, any tea. The specific name for spiced tea is MASALA CHAI. Masala means spice mixture. Afghani Chai ingredients: 4 whole cloves 2 cardamom pods 1 cinnamon stick, broken into pieces 3 cups water 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup whole milk 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 tablespoons black tea, such as Darjeeling or Assam directions: In a mortar, crush the cloves, cardamom pods and cinnamon. Transfer the crushed spices to a small saucepan, add the water, ginger and pepper and bring to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat, cover and let steep for 5 minutes. Add the milk and sugar to the pan and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and add the tea. Cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Stir the chai, then strain it into a warmed teapot or directly into teacups. Cooking Club Tip: Chai, a traditional Indian tea, blends black tea with sweet, heady spices, like cardamom, cinnamon and cloves with milk. While many people make chai with liquid concentrates, itâs better and more pungent when made with loose tea and whole spices.

watch out for products in the supermarket that are called "chai", they are about as authentic as a grandé magnon au lait frappucino latté from starbucks. ugh. "chai" just means "tea" pure and simple.
