Out of pure curiosity, does anyone know if coca plants or seeds are illegal in USA?

Question by BIGDADDY: Out of pure curiosity, does anyone know if coca plants or seeds are illegal in USA? I read about "coca tea" recently, and I came across a website/store here in the U.S. which sells the tea and also coca leaves. I wondered if people can just grow the plants for themselves at home and enjoy their good old coca tea, without having to continuously purchase the leaves when they run out. Also, if it is illegal to posess seeds/leaves/ or plants, then what makes the leaves sold online legal? Best answer:

Coca is regulated in the United States as a schedule II drug. You can grow it at home illegally, although your tea will most likely have very little cocaine compared to that used in Peru and Bolivia. The plant must be exposed to its native climate in order to produce a significant quantity of the alkaloids for which it is famous. Although drinking coca tea is mostly harmless, it will give you positive results on any drug test for cocaine. If you order it online, check the credentials of the seller. If the exporter is not fully certified, you could be prosecuted as an importer of illegal goods. On a positive note, most people in the United States probably couldn't recognize a coca plant if one was right in front of them. If you do manage to grow it, it will probably be better than the de-cocainized leaves available for import as tea. The laws can be read on both Erowid and Wikipedia. How you are prosecuted will vary by state (within the USA). http://www.erowid.org/plants/coca/coca_law.shtml http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca This has been asked before: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoR7mkD.lq91u41xbk69LL8jzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20090512130335AAmjRop
